Apple is developing a device that includes a 20-inch foldable screen, which journalist Mark Gorman described as a MacBook or iPad hybrid in a Power On newsletter.
Gorman says the company is exploring the possibility of a foldable device of this type. This is supported by Ross Young, CEO and Analyst at Display Supply Chain Consultants.
Young drew attention last week to Apple’s supposed plans to develop a device with a large, foldable screen, and Gorman added more depth to the rumor.
Gorman claims that the device has a dual screen that eliminates the need for a physical keyboard and trackpad – navigation and typing through the device is entirely touchscreen-based.
Regarding a possible release date, Gorman cites Young’s prediction for 2026, around the same time that the Apple car is rumored to be released.
Lenovo has done something similar with the ThinkPad X1 Fold, which features a 13-inch screen that folds in the middle into a touchscreen laptop. But Lenovo has not yet mastered the technology.
And with a possible release dating back to 2026, Apple has plenty of time to get things right if it really is developing a foldable device.
Apple plans to unveil iPhone SE 5G in March
For years, the tech industry has been clamoring for a low-cost iPhone aimed at emerging markets. A $200 device could make inroads in regions like Africa, South America and parts of Asia that are currently Android strongholds.
This would allow the company to register more customers for services. This makes the low-cost iPhone very profitable for the company in the long run. But the company has so far moved away from this approach.
But when Apple releases the 5G version of the iPhone SE, the company has a great opportunity to make a change. The new device is supposed to come as early as March.
A company can generate more revenue from long-term services and add people to its ecosystem. And that is by expanding its user base using the low-cost iPhone.
And those people might be more willing to try AirPods, Apple Watch, or the flagship iPhone later. Such a device could greatly help the company in India.
The company once spoke of the country as the next China. But the iPhone struggled to gain a foothold.
Research data indicates that the iPhone has less than 5 percent of the market in India. But a $199 device could change that.
