Porsche has announced, in a rare move, that it plans to build its global network of electric car charging stations. It also announced that it aims to have 80 percent of its sales from electric vehicles by 2030, as it currently sells the Taycan as well as some additional hybrid models.
The move was determined during the annual meeting of the automaker. It also revealed plans to expand its portfolio of electric vehicles with the Porsche Macan and Porsche 718.
The Porsche 718 is the third all-electric car in its portfolio. It follows the all-electric Porsche Taycan that debuted in 2019 and the upcoming Porsche Macan.
The company’s electric vehicle owners currently rely on third-party companies for their charging needs. The automaker has a partnership with EV charging provider Ionity, a joint venture with Ford, BMW, Daimler and Volkswagen.
But now Porsche has expressed its willingness to build its own charging network for electric vehicles, similar to the Tesla Supercharger.
Shipping sites are being built in regions with high demand in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. The first installations take place at the end of the year.
The company said that its charging stations are exclusive to Porsche customers. It aims to complete the Ionity freight network in Europe.
The investment in premium charging stations aims to boost sales of electric cars from Porsche, which it hopes will make up 80 percent of sales by 2030.
In addition, the company is also spending money on battery production, which it hopes will be ready for serial production by 2024.
Porsche has ambitious plans to electrify its fleet
The company envisions its charging stations as luxury lounges, where electric vehicle owners can grab a drink and relax while plugging their cars in.
The executives also said they were considering expanding the network to China and the United States at a later date.
Regarding the electric vehicles coming from the automaker, Porsche said the next generation Porsche 718 will be exclusively electric.
The Porsche 718 takes inspiration from the Mission R, the automaker’s racing car concept. But while the electric Porsche Macan comes out soon, the electric Porsche 718 won’t arrive until 2025.
