The city of Cairo was founded in the Fatimid era by Al-Mu’izz li-Din Allah on the lands of Egypt, and the city expanded throughout the ages and grew to include many cities extending around it, including the city of Giza, Al-Askar, Shubra, Al-Khaima, Helwan, in addition to the city of Al-Qata’i and other suburbs close to these cities. It is collectively called Greater Cairo, and the city of Cairo remained the most important among these cities because it is the capital of the Arab Republic of Egypt. One million people, with a population density of 15,000 people per square kilometer.

  • Cairo Tower: The Cairo Tower is in the center of the city and is located on the island of Zamalek overlooking the Nile River. This tower was built in the shape of the Egyptian lotus flower, reaching a height of 187 m. It was opened in 1961. At the top of the tower there is a tourist restaurant that enables tourists and visitors to see Landmark Cairo and enjoy the shape of the Nile River from this high altitude.
  • The Egyptian Opera House: It is located on the island of Zamalek, and was opened in 1988 to include three opera theaters, namely: the Grand Theatre, the Small Theatre, and the Open Theatre, where international opera shows, ballet shows, musical performances, and international symphonies in addition to art exhibitions abound. Fine artists around the world, which made this house a destination for lovers of fine arts.

Popular places

As for the popular places in the city of Cairo, they are far from calm, and are characterized by the large crowds of people and the overlap of their markets with its streets, and the most famous of these places are:

  • Ancient Egypt: One of the oldest and most ancient areas in Cairo. It includes Coptic Cairo, the Hanging Church, the Coptic Museum, and a number of synagogues. It also includes the medieval Citadel of Salah al-Din, the famous Hussein Mosque, and the Sayyida Zeinab neighborhood.
  • Khan al-Khalili: The Khan al-Khalili area attracts a large number of tourists coming to Cairo due to the large number of popular markets, bazaars and restaurants. This khan was established in 1400 by Sharif al-Khalili and was named after him.
