Russia is not responsible for the cyber attack against Ukraine

Russia is not responsible for the cyber attack against Ukraine

The Russian Embassy in the United States said, through its official account on the Twitter platform, that Russia rejected the American allegations that it was responsible for cyber attacks against Ukrainian banks and government websites, describing these allegations as baseless.

The statement said: We categorically reject these baseless statements on the part of the administration, and note that Russia has nothing to do with the aforementioned events and, in principle, has never carried out and does not carry out any malicious operations in cyberspace.

The United States and the United Kingdom said on Friday that Russian military hackers were behind a series of DDoS attacks that briefly disrupted the websites of Ukrainian banks and government websites.

Washington seeks to hold Russia accountable for its aggressive moves in the cyber field. This is according to statements by the US Deputy National Security Adviser, Anne Neuberger, to reporters at the White House.

“Russia likes to move in the shadows and relies on a long attribution process,” Neuberger said. In light of this, we are moving quickly to attribute DDoS attacks. We believe the Russian government is responsible for large-scale attacks against Ukrainian banks this week.

Neuberger added that the United States has data showing that infrastructure associated with the Russian military agency, commonly known as the GRU, has moved large amounts of communications to IP addresses and domains located in Ukraine.

British officials said in a simultaneous announcement that the GRU was almost certainly involved in DDoS attacks. These attacks work by flooding the targeted sites with large amounts of data.

“The attack demonstrated the continuing disregard for Ukrainian sovereignty,” the British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said in a statement. This activity is another example of Russia’s aggressive actions against Ukraine. This disruptive behavior is not acceptable.

Russia has denied any role in the DDoS attacks

Kiev has blamed Moscow for the DDoS attacks. It came amid heightened tensions since Russia began massing troops near the border. This raised fears that Russia was planning an attack. The Kremlin denied it was planning to make a further incursion into the country.

Ukrainian officials described the outages as the result of the largest DDoS attack in Ukraine’s history. But US company Netscout said the traffic was modest compared to digital attacks recorded elsewhere.

While DDoS attacks have had a limited impact, Neuberger said. But the latest wave of digital activity could be a precursor to more disruptive cyber-attacks accompanying a possible additional invasion of Ukraine’s sovereign territory.
