Huawei invests in digital energy

Huawei is spending 4 billion yuan ($632.52 million) to build a new headquarters and research and development center for its digital energy unit, according to local media reports, as the Chinese telecom giant diversifies its business amid US pressure.

The 21st Century Herald reports that Huawei Digital energy has signed an agreement with the local government of the southern city of Shenzhen, where the parent company is headquartered, for the project.

She said the signing was part of a larger event held by Shenzhen to mark the launch of new construction projects in the city.

The 21st Century Herald said Huawei’s project helps boost the “bi-carbon” supply chain, referring to China’s goal to reach its peak carbon emissions before 2030 and become carbon neutral before 2060.

Huawei is trying to diversify its portfolio beyond its core telecommunications and smartphone business, which has been hit hard in recent years by US export restrictions.

The company was registered in June of 2021 under the management of the current Chairman of the Board of Directors of the parent company, Ken Ho. Its registered capital is 3 billion yuan. It aims to meet the challenges of the era of big data, traffic and energy consumption.
