Intel is preparing to take on NVIDIA’s GeForce Now cloud gaming service with a new cloud computing solution, according to the tech giant’s latest investor note.
Intel’s upcoming service, Project Endgame, supports its own Arc graphics cards.
But it is not known if Intel is targeting the same gaming segment as GeForce Now, or if it might reach a different audience with Project Endgame.
After a meeting with investors, Intel released a detailed roadmap of its plans for the year and beyond.
The company has huge plans for its next line of discrete graphics cards, with the first Arc GPUs coming to market this quarter in new gaming laptops.
However, the company also mentions Project Endgame, indicating that it may also be available in 2022.
The company says Project Endgame gives users access to Intel Arc GPUs through a cloud service, providing a low-latency computing solution without owning the required hardware yourself.
This is very similar to NVIDIA’s subscription-based GeForce Now service. It allows users to emulate a GPU for gaming purposes, offering up to an RTX 3080.
However, the company does not expressly state that Project Endgame may be directed at gamers. And since NVIDIA has GeForce Now, a cloud gaming service, this could be a tough market for Intel to enter.
On the other hand, Intel is known not to be afraid to face competition, as it has released its own discrete GPUs in a market dominated by Nvidia and AMD.
In November 2021, Intel acquired RemoteMyApp, a cloud gaming startup headquartered in Poland.
RemoteMyApp is a third-party provider of cloud gaming solutions for businesses. Its acquisition could enhance Intel’s confidence in its ability to compete in the cloud gaming market.
Intel wants to release Project Endgame in 2022
GeForce Now allows users to use cloud-based GPUs to play games that are beyond the capabilities of their hardware.
And if Intel doesn’t offer a service similar to GeForce Now, it might offer something similar to Google Stadia.
However, Google Stadia is not working as planned. Creating such a service could be more difficult than creating a GeForce Now competitor.
And in a market filled with gaming services, such as Steam, Epic Games, and even Stadia. Intel might allow users to choose the platform and make it easier for them to play, rather than trying to create an entirely new platform.
Although, games are the first thing that comes to mind when talking about Project Endgame. But it is possible that Intel will try to target a less exploited market and target the product to professionals.
There may be a lot of potential in opening up cloud computing for workstations. And if Project Endgame proves its worth, it could be a solution for vulnerable hardware users who need to perform resource-intensive tasks that their hardware can’t support.
