NVIDIA and MediaTek said Monday that they will work together to bring artificial intelligence to advanced infotainment systems in cars, allowing for video streaming, games, or interaction with drivers.
And the American electronic chip giant, NVIDIA, said in a post on its blog: “MediaTek, a leader in the field of communication and multimedia, is collaborating with NVIDIA to provide new experiences for drivers and passengers inside the car.”
Under the agreement, announced at the Computex technology trade show in Taipei, Taiwan, MediaTek will integrate NVIDIA’s GPU microchip and automotive software into the MediaTek chips it provides to automakers for use with infotainment screens.
The two companies said that the MediaTek chips that use NVIDIA software will be compatible with the latter’s automated driving systems, with which dashboard screens can display the environment surrounding the car, and monitor the driver’s movements with cameras.
It is noteworthy that displays and in-car infotainment systems are becoming more complex, as automakers add features such as: games, artificial intelligence for voice-activated features, driver monitoring systems, and screens related to automated driving.
Qualcomm, MediaTek’s first competitor in the smartphone market, has also sought to attract automakers. Earlier this year it announced a partnership with SalesForce to develop a new platform for connected vehicles.
NVIDIA and MediaTek said the partnership provides the former with broader access to the $12 billion infotainment system market on chips.
NVIDIA focused on high-end car brands, such as: Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar Land Rover. MediaTek, which has its base in the Android smartphone chip segment, sells its Dimensity Auto technology to its lower-priced car lines.
